Gama Cafe

Occasionally our sweet tooth calls out for some good desserts. After looking, we stumbled upon Gama Cafe. Located on Whyte Ave, it is easily accessible and almost impossible to miss! Ranging from sweets to drinks and even savoury dishes, we are confident to say we were impressed with the quality provided at Gama cafe.

We were impressed with the decor and set up of the cafe itself. There was plenty of seating and the area was clean and neat. The decorations made the cafe seem fancy and very Instagram worthy, which we, and we’re sure many others will appreciate. Light instrumental music was playing in the background that added to the elegant atmosphere. The music was at the perfect loudness to allow for conversations to be easily heard while covering up and preventing awkward silences.

Since we went at a time that was most likely not a rush hour, we can justify the fact that only one person was working. He was very friendly and personally delivered the food to our table, which we were not expecting. We were a little thrown off when we were told the oven was broken so we could not get the fries (why is it still on the menu?), however everything else was ordered and delivered without and hitches. Event though we were the only people there, the food did take a bit to arrive, as there was only one person working, so we hope that during busier times there are more.

Albeit there only being one person working, the food looked just as good as the pictures in the menu. All the desserts looked similar to what was advertised, however the plating for the pastas was most likely not the best choice, as it made the food look like mush. In addition, the matcha red bean smoothie did not look too appetizing as everything was simply blended together; as a note, it still tasted fine.

The prices at Gama Cafe are definitely not bad but not super affordable either. For the amount of food you get it can be a little pricey for some (ranging from $10-$15 for most dishes,) however the food is pretty filling so it justifies itself a little bit.

For desserts we tried the strawberry waffle, chocolate toast, and red bean pancakes. They all tasted really good and were the most photogenic of the foods. The strawberry waffle  ($12) was a crispy waffle base with ice cream and strawberries topping it. We would recommend this to anyone who enjoys sweet things as it was quite sweet. The chocolate toast ($12) was a stack of cubes of toast that were drenched in chocolate sauce and topped with chocolate ice cream. If the waffles were sweet, then this dish borders on sickly. We would recommend this to Nutella lovers.  The texture of the sauce was a little thick and stuffy, which some of us were not the biggest fan of. The red bean pancakes ($5), we originally ordered because we were not sure what exactly they were (they were not described on the menu as pancakes.) They turned out to be warm, soft, and not too sweet, which we really enjoyed.

The savoury dishes we tried the Alfredo pasta and the pumpkin pasta ($12) were both really good, however they were a little too salty for some of us. Both of the pastas were very creamy and chewy, so the texture was very enjoyable. For a cafe that specializes in desserts, we believe that the pasta was quite good, however unless you are super hungry like we were, they are not the best option for a filling meal; the portion sizes were very small.

Our final verdict:

7/10 for service

7/10 for taste

8/10 for aesthetics

7.5/10 for price

Overall, we found that Gama Cafe was a great experience, and if we ever find ourselves craving elaborate toast or waffles again, we know where to go. If you haven’t gone, we definitely recommend going there once, however based on the portion sizes compared to the prices, we do not see it ever becoming somewhere to go on a regular basis.
